What is Royal Asscher doing about the problems regarding conflict diamonds?

Royal Asscher is committed to sourcing our materials ethically and sustainably. The company has a long history of environmentally and socially responsible practices, and we believe that sourcing our precious materials responsibly is of the utmost importance.

We employ a zero-tolerance policy towards conflict diamonds. We have taken vigorous steps to ensure that conflict diamonds do not enter our inventory.

Our rough diamonds are sourced and purchased from companies and nations compliant with the Kimberley Process - a joint global initiative to stop the flow of conflict diamonds. The Kimberly Process requires participating governments to ensure that each shipment of rough diamonds is transported in a secure container and is provided with a unique number and valid government-issued certificate (stating that the diamonds are conflict-free). More than 70 countries participate, representing all nations with significant involvement in the diamond trade. All 70 importing countries agree not to accept rough diamonds without an approved Kimberley Process certificate. Edward Asscher, former President of Royal Asscher Diamond Company, is one of the co-founders of the Kimberley Process, reinforcing the Asscher family and Royal Asscher’s commitment to work with ethical diamonds.

There are numerous issues facing the global diamond industry as it evolves. The Asscher family holds positions in professional associations, and as a company, Royal Asscher has a policy of lobbying for human, social and environmental rights working with forward-thinking colleagues in the industry.

Royal Asscher’s Presidents are a member of the oldest diamond exchange globally - World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB). The WFDB was founded on September 17, 1890, in Amsterdam. This is the oldest diamond exchange in the world that represents the Dutch diamond trade.

The World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association passed a resolution at their Antwerp meeting in July 2000, creating the World Diamond Council (WDC). The resolution called for the newly formed WDC to include representation from the diamond industry itself and also from among countries where diamonds play a major economic role and from the international banking sector. The ultimate mandate for the World Diamond Council is the development, implementation, and oversight of a tracking system for the export and import of rough diamonds to prevent the exploitation of diamonds for illicit purposes such as war and inhumane acts. Human rights activists refer to diamonds exploited in this way as “blood” or “conflict” diamonds.

The diamond industry does not condone the exploitation of diamonds for illicit or immoral purposes. Nor will it acquiesce to outside efforts to disrupt the importance that diamonds are to the established and emerging economies around the world. Rather it is the goal of the diamond industry, working through the World Diamond Council, to work openly and in partnership with the people of the world whenever and wherever such challenges occur.

Former Royal Asscher President and current Honorary Chairman Edward Asscher is now the President of the World Diamond Council.

The entire staff of Royal Asscher is fully aware of the Kimberley Process requirements. In addition, they are aware of government regulations and Royal Asscher’s policies to combat conflict diamonds. Our sales staff are encouraged to enter into discussions with interested customers about conflict diamonds and the role of Royal Asscher in preventing this unethical trade.

We also require our suppliers to ensure that they only supply goods manufactured under working conditions according to international guidelines, especially the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international labor conventions, in particular relating to child labor.

Thanks to international cooperation between governments, the diamond industry, retail jewelers, and non-governmental organizations such as Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada, tremendous improvements have been made in the fight against conflict diamonds. However, one diamond used to fund  conflict is one too many, and constant vigilance is essential.

How do I know that a diamond from Royal Asscher is conflict-free?

All diamonds come with a Royal Asscher Authenticity Certificate that clearly underlines our strict conflict diamond policy. We guarantee that every piece of Royal Asscher jewelry is ethically produced and 100% conflict-free.

How can I best maintain my jewelry?

The brilliance of the diamond depends on the amount of light entering the stone and reflecting it back on the human eye. However, the tiniest smudge of grease on the surface of a stone can dull the reflection.

Even the touch of a finger leaves natural oil on the diamond that affects its performance. If you would like to treat your Royal Asscher jewelry to a professional cleaning, take your diamond jewelry to one of our boutiques. As part of the cleaning, we always check if the stones are secured safely in their settings, and if not, we will conduct the necessary repairs directly. To keep your diamonds clean between visits, use our Royal Asscher cleaning kit or brush your jewelry in lukewarm soapy water with liquid detergent.Avoid using a sink when cleaning your jewelry. If you insist on cleaning your jewelry in a sink, ensure the sink stopper is firmly in place. Be careful if using a brush: diamonds may come loose from their settings if brushed roughly. If you’ve applied hand lotion, wait at least 10-15 minutes before putting your rings back on so your skin has absorbed access lotion.

Finally, store your jewelry properly. Because diamonds are very hard, they may scratch other jewels and each other. When traveling, use a travel bag that can store individual pieces safely and separately.
